The origins of the Loteria game can be traced back to Italy, with the earliest references dating as far back as the 13th century. However, it made its way to Mexico much later, around 1779, at a time when gambling was largely reserved for the aristocracy.

During the Mexican War of Independence, which spanned from 1810 to 1821, Loteria emerged as a favored pastime among soldiers. Its popularity witnessed a significant rise as soldiers returned home, sharing the game with their families.

In the late 1800s and early 20th century, traveling carnivals played a pivotal role in further popularizing Loteria. The game became an integral part of the entertainment offered during these tours, reaching even the most remote regions of Mexico.
